This week’s photo is of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Whilst travelling recently we had a 6 hour stopover in Instanbul and decided to leave the airport and see a little of the city. What an amazing building this is!

I am celebrating having reached my 100th sale in my Etsy shop! There is something rather wonderful about moving from 2 digits into 3 digits and reaching such a nice big round number. I also just made it within my 1 year Etsy anniversary, which is in 2 weeks time.
A big THANK YOU to all my lovely customers and supporters out there.
A special thank you also goes to Mr Big Skies Jewellery for his unwavering belief in me and my endeavours, and for a) letting our house become overrun by beads; b) listening to me talk incessantly about all things beading; c) still managing to look interested when I say “what do you think of this” for the umpteenth time; and d) devoting precious weekend time to bead/supply shopping.

Today I would like to feature one of my favourite gemstone combinations – glossy faceted black Onyx with lovely speckled Snowflake Obsidian. I think these two stones were made to go together, they just seem to bring out the best in each other. They are separated here by tiny square bright silvertone spacer beads.

What makes this necklace work for me is the contrasting textures of the faceted onyx and the smooth snowflake obsidian. My three favourite jewelry design basics are contrasting shapes, mixed textures and top quality gemstones – this necklace has all three. It also has a great feeling of balance too, which is also important in my jewelry designs.

Most of the time I have to gently inform people that even though we live in Africa, we do not have wild animals roaming the streets. Johannesburg is a first world city.

I may however have to take this back….a Brown Hyena has just been found in a well-populated Johannesburg suburb just up the road from where I live!!
This is what a Brown Hyena looks like – they stand over a metre high and weigh about 40 kg. I have seen them in the Kruger Park, and they are quite scary!

Happily, especially for the Hyena’s sake, she has been darted by the FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and safely repatriated to Johannesburg Zoo.

I have just returned from a wonderful, relaxing vacation. One of the beautiful places I visited was Venice. Venice really is like no other place on earth – being there is like stepping back in time and into another world; it’s magical.

This has been a sad week as I have had to say goodbye to one of my furry friends. Tigger gave me 16 years of solid companionship and endless hours of amusement with her quirky personality. She will be sorely missed, but remembered very fondly with a smile.

This week’s Friday Photo was taken at Glacier Bay in Alaska. This picture shows the top edge of the Marjorie Glacier. It is one of the most beautiful things I have seen with its jagged, abstract, sharp shapes, and Glacier Bay is probably the most beautiful place I have ever been to – a small piece of heaven on earth.
